G-20 Summit Addresses Cryptocurrency Regulations
The 13th G-20 Summit which took place in Argentina on November 30 and December 1st addressed crypto regulations, albeit briefly. In the summarized declaration posted on the official website of the Council of the European Union, stated that cryptocurrencies are crucial for sustainable growth in the open and resilient financial system.
While recognizing the importance of the cryptocurrency industry for the global economy, the G-20 also noted that it will introduce Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and anti-terrorist measures per standards of Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an intergovernmental body formed to fight money laundering and terrorist financing:
“We will regulate crypto-assets for anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism in line with FATF standards and we will consider other responses as needed.”
The G-20 countries also called for the international taxation of cryptocurrencies which is expected to be implemented by each member state by the year 2020.
“a taxation system for cross-border electronic payment services.”
Seven EU Member States Promoting Blockchain
During a meeting of EU transport ministers in Brussels early this week, a declaration for the use of Blockchain’s Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) was signed by seven southern European Union member states. The declaration was reportedly initiated by Malta followed by six other member states, France, Italy, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain, and Greece.
The government officials explained that DLT could be a game changer for southern EU economies. Stating that education, transport, Land Registry, customs, company registry, healthcare, and other services can be transformed by this technology.
The report further notes that this technology has the potential to go beyond digital government services, fostering transparency, access to public information and better customs collection.
The State of Crypto Affairs
The crypto market has still been unable to recover since plunging into the downward trend early this year. With the most popular cryptocurrency, BTC is hovering between the 3,000 and 4,000 dollar mark and only experiencing minor recoveries periodically. Despite the bearish market, the drama continues as the CEO of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin and the CEO of TRON Justin Sun is having a twitter-war while pushing for market dominance.
Sun tweeted that Ethereum is built on hype and cannot possibly lead the next crypto wave, to which Buterin replied that anyone who puts a dollar sign followed by a ticker symbol in their tweet is basically a self-identified shill and not worth listening to.
Only time will tell who finally leads us out of this bearing trend, but until then, the crypto community is beckoning on both leaders putting in the same energy into improving their distinctive technologies.
