Bitfinex Demands Users Provide Tax Information

Some users of Bitfinex are furious after the major cryptocurrency exchange demanded that a select number of customers provide tax information, which could be passed on to their country of residence. The company said it is complying with British Virgin Islands law – which stipulates that “certain account information” should be reported. Bitfinex said users need to fill out a self-certification form,  dependant on whether they live in the U.S. or not AND whether they’re individuals or entities. The exchange also said the requirement was in line with its terms of service agreement. In reaction to the news, influential crypto personality WhalePanda called for a boycott of Bitfinex, telling Twitter followers that they should “peacefully protest by withdrawing their money”.
