About Ordinals

Ordinals is an open-source project that offers a new numbering scheme for satoshis, the smallest unit of Bitcoin, that allows for individual tracking and transferring of individual SATs. This numbering scheme is based on the order in which satoshis inscriptions are mined and transferred, hence the name “ordinals”.

The project includes a BIP describing the scheme, an index to track the location of satoshis, an Ordinals wallet for making ordinal-aware transactions, a block explorer, and functionality for inscribing satoshis with digital artifacts. Additionally, the project offers a system of rarity based on periodic events in the Bitcoin network, such as blocks, difficulty adjustments, halvings, and cycles, which can be represented using degree notation.
