You can become a proud Owner of an Ether Rock…for a Price!
The EtherRock NFTs are plain-looking drawings of a rock. All of them share exactly the same shape but come in different colors. The project created by an anonymous NFT artist was most likely inspired by the pet rock collectible toys, which became famous in 1975 and which sold over 1 million copies.
For EtherRock on the other hand, only 100 NFTs have been minted. They are not listed on OpenSea (all “EtherRocks” there are fake!) and are exclusively available on the project’s website. The project founder also runs a Twitter bot that tracks all EtherRock transactions. The project website states:
These virtual rocks serve NO PURPOSE beyond being able to be brought [sic] and sold, and giving you a strong sense of pride in being an owner of 1 of the only 100 rocks in the game 🙂
While the recent 45 ETH sale for Ether Rock #21 was a new record, all other sales that occur every other hour are about in the same ballpark. At the time of writing, the cheapest Ether Rock is the NFT numbered #59, which is on offer for just 36.23 ETH (112,783.99 USD).
If you’re not into Rocks, how about fake Humans?
Earlier this year, the founder of EtherRock spawned another NFT project called NFT Sprites. In a similar fashion as EtherRock, the website lets you buy moving portraits of persons. The trick is that none of the portraits were taken from real people. Instead, all of the up to 100 NFTs were created procedurally by an AI.
While some of the moving images have small artifacts that hint at them being fake, most of the portraits look deceptively real. For example, you can purchase this authentic-looking Treasury Secretary for the cheap price of only 5 ETH (15,592.80 USD).
You can’t hear what he says, but we’re sure it’s something Treasury Secretary-y.
At the time of writing, 35 out of the 100 NFT Sprites have already been minted and the price for minting the next NFT is 6.125 ETH. Like Ether Rock, the price will gradually increase until all 100 pieces have been minted.
